Saskatchewan's Environmental Champions

Saskatchewan Conservation Data Centre

The Saskatchewan Conservation Data Centre (SKCDC) was formed in 1992 to serve the public by gathering, interpreting and distributing standardized information on the ecological status of provincial wild species and communities. It is the provincial clearinghouse for threatened and endangered species information.

The goal is to provide reliable and current scientific information about plants, animals, and ecological communities as a guide to conservation decisions.

The SKCDC began as a co-operative venture between Saskatchewan Environment, The Nature Conservancy (U.S.A.) and The Nature Conservancy of Canada. Currently, the SKCDC is a partnership between the Province and Nature Saskatchewan, and resides in the Resource Stewardship Branch of Saskatchewan Environment. The SKCDC is also a member of NatureServe and its affiliate, NatureServe Canada.

NatureServe Canada is a non-profit conservation organization that includes eight independent conservation data centres (CDCs) covering all ten provinces and the Yukon Territory. The SKCDC, like other CDCs, conducts biological inventories to find and document rare species. It also studies and classifies ecological communities, analyzes critical conservation issues and provides customized information products and conservation services. The goal is to provide reliable and current scientific information about plants, animals, and ecological communities as a guide to conservation decisions.

Of special note is the SKCDC logo, the Yellow Immaculate Lily, (Lilium philadelphicum var. andinum forma immaculata). This is a very rare form of the provincial emblem characterized by lemon-yellow flowers, devoid of the usual dark spots. It is known to occur at only a few locations in Manitoba and Alberta each and less than 10 locations in Saskatchewan. This particular form is considered critically imperiled globally.
