Saskatchewan's Water
Saskatchewan is favoured by an abundant supply of fresh water. In fact, some 7 percent of Canada's and 1.5 percent of the world's fresh water can be found in this province. However, most of the water is in Saskatchewan's North. In the South, where most people live, conditions are semi-arid and the water supply is less abundant. Drought and water shortages are not uncommon and water quality is sometimes poor. A long term water conservation strategy is required to sustain water supplies.
In January of 2005, the Government of Saskatchewan announced a process to create a water conservation strategy for Saskatchewan. The document Conserving Our Water - A Water Conservation Plan for Saskatchewan, A Discussion Guide for Public Consultation is the first major step.
In this document, citizens will find a summary of water conservation issues, as well as a series of questions that invite public input. Opportunities have been created for groups and for individual citizens to make presentations to officials. There will also be opportunities for individuals to make written submissions through a Water Conservation survey online or by mail.
