Saskatoon Environmental Film Festival: See the Change, Be the Change

Our Annual Environmental Film Festival in Saskatoon is scheduled for March 5th - 7th. It will be taking place at two locations: at the Neatby-Timlin Theatre (241 Arts) on March 5th for a feature film and presentation of SEN's Environmental Activist Awards, and at the beautifully restored Roxy Theatre on March 6th and 7th.

The festival will connect the Saskatoon community and University campus to inspire positive action around environmental issues represented by films. “At last year’s environmental film festival we saw the change, this year we are taking the festival to another level and pushing for change in action” says Amber Burton, U of S student and this year's festival coordinator.

Many of the Environmental Films selected for this year’s lineup showcase success stories that involve environmental solutions. The festival is aimed at connecting local and global issues and inspiring positive environmental and social change within the Saskatoon community.

University of Saskatchewan Campus and Saskatoon social and environmental organizations will have a chance to set up booths at the event to showcase the positive change they are making within Saskatoon.

The schedule is posted on our website at http://econet.sk.ca/filmfest/films2010.html.

Stop GE Alfalfa from Contaminating Canadian Farms: Canadian Farm and Consumer Groups Urge U.S. Department of Agriculture to Stop Monsanto’s New GE Seed

Saskatoon, March 3, 2010 - Today a number of prominent Canadian farmer and consumer groups urged the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) not to permit the introduction of Monsanto’s genetically engineered (GE) alfalfa in the U.S., citing serious concerns about the future of organic food and farming in North America.

The USDA invited comments on their Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of allowing Monsanto’s GE (herbicide tolerant) alfalfa. Canadian groups – including the Saskatchewan Organic Directorate, Beyond Factory Farming, and the National Farmers Union - responded by submitting highly critical analyses to the USDA. They argue that GE alfalfa plantings in the U.S. would contaminate Canadian alfalfa and cause serious harm to Canadian farmers and the environment.

If the USDA disregards these and similarly critical comments from American farmers and consumers, the U.S. will likely allow GE alfalfa by the end of the summer. If the USDA decides in favour of GE alfalfa, the current court injunction on plantings in the U.S. will be lifted. Monsanto is also challenging this same injunction at the U.S. Supreme Court. The case is scheduled for argument on April 27. Should the Supreme Court find in Monsanto’s favour, it could lift the injunction pending the conclusion of the EIS.

Bison on the Edge Conference Announced

Big River, Saskatchewan: The Sturgeon River Plains Bison Stewards are pleased to announce an upcoming international conference on plains bison to be held in Big River, June 8-10, 2010. The conference, called Bison on the Edge, brings together local, national and international expertise on plains bison and on the management of large wildlife in the agricultural/wildlands interface.

“The Sturgeon River plains bison are unique and significant,” said Clint Panter, Vice- President of the Bison Stewards. “No other population of plains bison in Canada is roaming free within its traditional range. With this conference, we will bring the body of knowledge and research that has been accumulating about this population, to the attention of area residents. We see this conference as just the beginning. It will set the stage for continuing the development of a management plan for the Sturgeon River plains bison”.

The conference is being hosted by the Sturgeon River Plains Bison Stewards, a non- government organization created to act as a liaison among the jurisdictions and stakeholders within the bison range. The Bison Stewards promote education, awareness and environmental and bison stewardship, and undertake management initiatives to reduce the impacts of bison on local farmers.

Confirmed conference sponsors so far include Parks Canada, the Wildlife Conservation Society, the National Wildlife Refuge Association, and the Prince Albert Model Forest.

Volunteer Opportunities

Spring Flowers Will Soon Be Blooming – It’s Time to PlantWatch!

PlantWatch Saskatchewan, delivered through Nature Saskatchewan, is looking for volunteer plantwatchers to watch select plants bloom in the spring. While enjoying the great outdoors, all you have to do as a plantwatcher is find one (or more) of the selected 18 native plants or 2 non-native plants in your area, watch and record the first bloom, and submit the results. Even one observation of one plant is a great contribution! The data collected over time is used to monitor how plants are responding to changes in our climate, where the changes are taking place, and at what rate these changes are occurring. Scientists believe that climate change is affecting blooming times across Canada, and that this trend will continue.

PlantWatch enables "citizen scientists" of all ages and skill levels to get involved in this important climate change research program. There is no charge to sign up as a participant, and you will receive two newsletters per year and a datasheet to record your results. Other PlantWatch materials, such as a wall chart, poster (in French and English), Canada in Bloom booklet, and brochure, are available to the general public. Individuals, schools, guides and scouts, and groups of all types are encouraged to participate. Check out http://www.plantwatch.ca for more details on the program. To receive information on the PlantWatch program call Deanna at 780-9273 or 1-800-667-4668 (SK only), or by e-mail at plantwatch@naturesask.ca.

Lead a Jane Jacobs Walking Tour

Jane’s Walk is coming to Saskatoon on May 1st and 2nd, 2010. Road Map Saskatoon is looking for tour guides to lead the walks in various communities in Saskatoon.

We are inviting you to lead a tour in an area where you live, work or play. It simply involves planning a route, thinking through the stories, places and people you want people to hear about and discuss, then walking participants through it - you decide what's important. If you like, you could share the guiding duties with a few other resourceful friends or colleagues. Bicycle tours are also welcome.

Jane's Walk aids in the socially desirable goal of getting people out of their cars and onto the sidewalks for the basic tasks of daily life, shopping, school and work. Jane's Walks are meant to be fun and participatory - everyone's got a story and they're usually keen to share it. All tours are given, and taken, for free. We help with the publicity, logistics and website management. For details of what Jane's Walk has been like in the past visit our website at: http://www.janeswalk.net.

Important Bird Area Caretakers Needed

Nature Saskatchewan is currently setting up an Important Bird Areas Caretakers Network in Saskatchewan. The Important Bird Areas program is an international effort to identify, conserve, and monitor a network of sites that provide essential habitat for bird populations. The goal for the Caretakers Network is to have a volunteer caretaker assigned to each Important Bird Area to watch for changes in bird populations or conservation threats, conduct outreach and raise awareness about their site, and undertake on-the-ground stewardship if needed.

We are seeking volunteer caretakers to be the eyes, ears and hands on the ground for the 53 Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in Saskatchewan.

For more information about Important Bird Areas visit http://www.ibacanada.ca. This site lists the names of the 53 Important Bird Areas we are seeking caretakers for (look under “Explore IBAs” and “IBA site directory”).
