Powering Both Sides of Nuclear Debate

Joshua Page, Prince Albert Daily Herald

Prince Albert - The somewhat gentle thunderstorm crashing outside Rivier Academy on Monday night gave some insight to the debate happening inside.

Author and retired professor Jim Harding and University of Saskatchewan physics professor Chary Rangacharyulu provided nuclear power pros and cons to an audience of more than 200 people.

Rangacharyulu kicked off the debate by placing a Geiger counter on a desk. As the counter beeped away showing background radiation was present, Rangacharyulu said everything contains some form of radiation and that nuclear power could be utilized safely.

Then it was Harding's turn. "We've been greenwashed on this issue for 10 years to try and convince us that nuclear power is a carbon-free technology," he said, noting mining, enriching, decommissioning and plant construction were carbon intensive.

Crown Lands Campaign

Last fall the Government of Saskatchewan announced a program to sell 1.6 million acres of Crown land (an area equal in size to PEI) to current leasees at a price of 10% below market value. While lessees are not required to purchase their leases they have been told in writing from the Government that they should know that it is the government's intention to see saleable land in the hands of private ownership.

These sales are not reviewed by the ministry of Environment prior to sale and there is well over 1 million acres of native grasslands, aspen parkland and wetlands to be sold. These native public lands are critical in preserving our native flora and fauna in Saskatchewan. The lack of concern being expressed by Saskatchewan residents is being interpreted as support for the sales program.

Check out The Lorax Society

The Lorax Society is an ad hoc group of environmental activists seeking to better recognize the heroes in our community.

Canada is home to some of the greatest environmental advocates in the world. Yet a shockingly small number of these remarkable citizens have never been honoured for their important contributions to Canada. Less than 15 Canadians have ever been awarded the Order of Canada for efforts to protect the environment – that’s less than 0.3% of all 5604 awards given since 1967.

These awards are based on nomination – unless someone’s name is put forward by their colleagues, they cannot be considered. The Lorax Society feels the environmental community needs to better recognize the heroes in our midst and nominate more of our colleagues for these awards. These folks want you to consider nominating a colleague for recognition as a fine example of what a citizen should be.

Please visit http://www.loraxsociety.com website to complete a survey, sign up for an e-newsletter or join the Facebook group to learn more about existing awards and how to nominate your colleagues.

Volunteer Opportunities

Tanzanian Katesh Benefit Concert & Used Book Sale

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Saskatoon

Our goal is to raise several thousand dollars for the girls hostel in Katesh. This building will eventually be home to 48 girls who have won CHES scholarships for secondary school but live in remote rural areas and have no place to live in the town in which their school is located. The projected cost of the completed complex (which will house 48 girls) is about $54,000. $28,000 has been raised to date! http://www.canadianharambee.ca

We've had a generous initial response of volunteers, but more help is needed with donations of used books, loading of books into vehicles on June 11 and 12. (We need both vehicles and "loaders")(dollies are welcome); set-up for the book sale; provision of baked goods; sale of books or refreshments (two hour shifts); hosts for the reception following the concert.

The dynamic Gala Trio have generously donated their time and talent for the evening concert. Consisting of Audrey Bayduze, piano, Gaye-Lynn Kern, soprano, and Arlene Shiplett, French horn, their repertoire ranges from classical to contemporary. Tickets (including the reception) are only $10.

To volunteer or purchase concert tickets: until June 1st, please call Elaine Carter (955-1905); from June 6 to 12, please call Sara Williams (373-6345); from June 1 to 6, please call either Elaine or Sara.
