Bisphenol-A Poses Disease Risk for Adults, Study Says
September 16, 2008 - An influential new study linking bisphenol A to heart disease and diabetes is raising the possibility that Health Canada erred in April when it concluded that the chemical used to make plastic poses no risk to adults.
The new research, the largest investigation to date on the chemical's possible effects in humans, found that those with higher exposures to bisphenol A had 2.9 times the odds of having cardiovascular disease and 2.4 times the odds of having adult-onset diabetes, compared with those with lower exposures. Those with more of the chemical also had liver enzyme abnormalities.
The study, issued Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, was based on the typical ranges of bisphenol A found in American adults.

Friends of Lac Pelletier Launch Legal Action
Swift Current Online - The Friends of Lac Pelletier, a group of concerned citizens, have filed three Notices of Motion after what they consider to be unwanted development plans for the lake moving forward. One application is being put against the RM and the Reeve of Lac Pelletier; another notice is being set against the Provincial Director of Community Planning, and a third notice deals with Fisheries and Oceans Canada for the approval of a marina.
Murray Walter, the lawyer representing the Friends of Lac Pelletier says all three notices are filed separately, but they are all connected. He says the main goal is to require all levels of government to make decisions that comply with their own bylaws, Provincial government legislation and regulations, and Federal government legislations.
Walter says his clients understand that the developer is proceeding with excavation work with respect to the marina, even though it is clear that there is no permit. The Friends of Lac Pelletier are hoping to get a ruling from the courts that will halt the development.
Two of the Notices of Motion will be in the Court of Queen's Bench in Swift Current on September 29th, while the third does not have a court date set.
Casino Spotlights Stack Odds Against Birds, Yorkton Man Says
Bird lovers are raising concerns about the bright lights used by some Saskatchewan casinos.
Three Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority venues have large spotlights pointed into the night sky. At the Painted Hand Casino in Yorkton, and at two other SIGA sites, the light rays form a giant teepee in the night sky and can seen from many kilometres away.
Larry Off, a bird enthusiast in Yorkton, believes there is a link between the lights and an inordinate number of dead birds he came across while walking around the community last Friday. "These birds were — there were literally hundreds and hundreds of them — they were caught up and they would just stay up in these lights until they played out," he told CBC News. "And then they'd basically fall out of the sky and land on the streets."
Off approached the casino and was directed to SIGA, where officials have said they will look into his complaint.

Rideshare Week October 6th to 10th
Rideshare Week 2008 is a national event that promotes carpooling. This year, the cities of Saskatoon, Regina, Calgary, and Edmonton will be participating through carpool.ca. Saskatoon’s RoadMap 2020 is funding the regional carpool program in Saskatoon. As a result, the Carpool.ca program is now available free of charge throughout the region. This has resulted in a number of partnerships with Saskatoon employers including the University of Saskatchewan, the Saskatoon Health Region, the City of Saskatoon, Cameco Corporation, Innovation Place and others.
The focus of this event is a ‘Pledge to Pool’ campaign. Commuters will be encouraged to complete an on-line pledge to carpool at least once during Rideshare Week. All pledges will be entered into a random draw for prizes. This year, we are considering a few additional competitions including ‘longest commute’, ‘happiest carpool group’ and ‘longest lasting carpool group’. Also, new this year, an award to the employer in each region with the greatest increase in Carpool.ca participation and the largest number of pledges. Look for more information on the Rideshare Week page of Carpool.ca http://www.carpool.ca/rideshare.asp.

The KiKK study commissioned by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection in Germany and made public on December 10th 2007 examined cancer rates in young children between 1980 -2003. It showed a 60% increase in solid cancers, a 117% increase in leukemia among children up to five years of age living within 5 km of 16 German nuclear reactors, and a 20-40% increase for all cancers in children living within a 50 km radius of the plants. These nuclear power plants were operating under normal conditions, with radiation releases well within levels allowed for civilian populations.

Christian Animism (A Work in Progress)

Discussions run from 7:30 – 9pm. For more information please call Shawn at 653-2544.
'Christian animism', for many, can suggest nothing more than crude syncretism, a blasphemous oxymoron. I hope to challenge that view, though my intention is more apologetic than polemic. I write from my own experience, and I draw on the experience and reflections of many who find themselves on the fringes of church and society. I pay attention to Witches, Buddhists, Faery-watchers, deep ecologists, and Elders. I also search out the fertile places of my own tradition, seeking to hear a Word of healing for our Earth, a Word of grace for the trees and the animals, a Word of invitation back to the garden of Creation, our once and future home. (from the Preface).
