New Beetle Has Arrived, Threatens Elm Trees With Disease
Maple Creek, SK - Elm tree aficionados beware, there’s a new, hungry beetle in town. The banded elm bark beetle, (Scolytus schevyrewi) is an invasive species native to Asia and was first discovered in North America in 2003. It first appeared in Canada in Medicine Hat, Alberta in 2006. Now, it has moved into parts of Ontario, Manitoba and five Saskatchewan communities: Maple Creek, Moose Jaw, Assiniboia, Estevan and Weyburn.
The native elm beetle, (Hylurgopinus rufipes), which is one of the species commonly found in Saskatchewan’s elm trees and the smaller European elm bark beetle, (Scolytus multistriatus) can both transmit the disease and have devastated elm populations in most parts of eastern and central Canada. The new banded elm bark beetle can also spread Dutch elm disease.
“Part of the problem is that it is an exotic species, so it arrived here in North America without its complement of natural enemies,” said Rory McIntosh, provincial entomologist.
